Garden City’s Town Center, which opened in September of 2009 with the dedication of the City’s new 33,000 square foot City Hall, serves as the epicenter of local government and the “heart and soul” of Garden City. Located on Dean Forest Road just south of I-16, the Town Center earned praise from Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue as a “shining example” for the State of Georgia and won a Georgia Planning Association for its innovative design.
The City is, in partnership with its private development partner Garden City Town Center, LLC (“GCTC”), reestablishing the center of its city in a location that will retain the comfort of small town living with the amenities of a larger urban environment. The City has designated the Town Center its first Mixed Use District in order to promote a livable, sustainable urban environment with a vibrant mix of uses on a walkable pedestrian scale.
On July 19, 2010 the City formally approved the Town Center Master Plan. GCTC will create a network of well connected urban streets designed to accommodate pedestrian comfort. They will include on-street parking, street trees and planting, sidewalks, public art, benches, drinking fountains and bike racks, all to support a welcoming environment.
The Georgia Public Safety Training Center’s Regional Police Academy is the first building to open in the Town Center. Design and construction is expected to proceed in 2011 on the historic Dotson House that will house the City’s new Visitor Center and a new Public Library that will serve all of West Chatham County.
When completed, the new City Center will embody walkable neighborhoods and a mix of uses conveniently located that will include shop front retail, restaurants, cafes, professional offices, medical facilities, residences and parks and open spaces.
